BC Rivers Day - September 27

Jun 29 - Sep 28 2020

BC Rivers Day takes place on September 27 this year and we invite river and freshwater enthusiasts from all across BC to start planning events as part of this year’s BC Rivers Day celebration.

Each year, thousands of British Columbians get involved with BC Rivers Day to celebrate our waterways, the communities they sustain, the many outdoor recreation opportunities they foster and the wildlife they support. Recreational clubs, conservation organizations, community groups, schools, and local governments host BC Rivers Day events across the province, including stream clean-ups and habitat enhancement projects, paddling trips, riverside nature walks, community festivals, art exhibitions and ceremonies.

BC Rivers Day coincides with World Rivers Day which is celebrated in more than 70 countries each year.

Mark Angelo, the founder of Rivers Day, explains the roots of Rivers Day and its importance here in an article by Canadian Geographic.

Although this year is going to be different, we have an opportunity to use this annual initiative to help bring our communities together once again. We have created a new toolkit for Rivers Day organizers that outlines what's involved in planning a BC Rivers Day event, including suggestions for how to make it a safe and COVID-19 friendly event.

Please let us know about any activities and events you are organizing and add your event to the BC Rivers Day calendar. Once we know who's doing an event, we can help promote your event via our website, social media and through our e-newsletter (sign up here). Please share this email with your network.

Visit our website to find out more about BC Rivers Day and get in touch with us if you are looking for ideas or have any questions.

We are very grateful to FortisBC for their support of BC Rivers Day.

Thank you,

Emmie Dykstra

UBC Rural Evidence Review - Survey

Jan 20 - Mar 01 2021

Results to date from survey participants about the difficulties that they experienced when travelling to other communities for care, including financial costs to patients and their families (costs that are not often considered when services are planned). The summary report can also be accessed here: bit.ly/RERsurveysummary. Please also note that this survey is ongoing and will remain active until the project’s end, March 2021. The survey is available here: bit.ly/ruralevidencereview.

To follow up, a new survey was created to understand patients' out-of-pocket costs when travelling for health care. The voices and experiences of rural citizens-patients are critical for health care planning. We will use the findings to create a complete understanding of what it costs when health services are not available locally. As always, the findings will be shared with the Health Authorities and the Ministry of Health, and rural communities across BC. The survey is available until January 31, 2020 and can be accessed here: bit.ly/CostsRural.
