Committees

Council Committee Minutes are posted online following Committee approval. If you cannot find the Minutes of a particular Committee, contact the Municipal Hall for more information.

Members

Applications are collected for vacant Committee and Commission positions. This is done in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and under the authority of the Local Government Act, for the purpose of determining eligibility for placement.

Town of Smithers Council advertises in local newspapers for citizens wishing to volunteer their time to serve on a Committee or Commission of Council. The advertisement includes a deadline for submission.

Persons interested in volunteering to serve in this capacity are requested to respond by submitting an application outlining their interests, experience, and the Committee they are interested in serving on. Applications are to be sent to:

As part of the selection process, Council reviews all submissions and a report is prepared recommending appointment of the successful candidates. All candidates will be notified, in writing, as to the outcome of the selection process. Unsuccessful applicants will remain on file and contacted for interest in the event additional vacancies occur.

Under Freedom of Information legislation, any application submitted may be subject to public viewing.

Economic Development

" It will be the Mission of the Committee to encourage sustainable economic diversity and growth within the community and to advise Council on economic development initiatives, to endeavor to research social, environmental, and economic impacts of specific initiatives while operating in an open and engaging manner."

Advisory Planning Commission

The role of the Advisory Planning commission (APC) is to represent the Community's interest in planning-related issues affecting the Town of Smithers.

Board of Variance

The Board of Variance is established to hear appeals from persons dissatisfied with the ruling of the Director of Development Services insofar as the application or interpretation of the Zoning Bylaw is concerned.

Committee of the Whole

This is a Committee of all Council members which deals with matters in a less formal manner than at a Regular Council meeting.

Emergency Measures

This Committee is the liaison between Council and the Emergency Planning Committee which is the Committee responsible for the preparation of the Smithers Disaster Plan.

Fall Fair Management

This is a committee established by agreement between the Town of Smithers and the Bulkley Valley Industrial and Agricultural Association.

Family Court

A Family Court Committee has been formed by the Town of Smithers pursuant to Section 5 of the Provincial Court Act of BC.

Library Board

This is an independent board functioning to administer the operation of the Public Library.

Tourism Advisory

The Committee is to review the Town's 2% Hotel Tax fund and has authority to disperse funds as they see fit, within the budget pre-approved by Council.

Measuring Up The North

Measuring Up The North is a sub-committee of the Spirit of BC Community Committee.

Regional District of Bulkley Nechako

The Town of Smithers is a member Municipality of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako.
