Town Council

Every three years, six councillors and one mayor are elected to serve as the voice and decision-making body of the Town of Smithers. The elected officials act as one body and collectively decide on the best course of action in dealing with municipal affairs. Issues are brought forth to Council from a number of avenues: Members of the public are encouraged to present issues to Council at Regular Meetings; Council Committees make recommendations to Council to proceed on a course of action; Correspondence is presented to Council at Regular Meetings for discussion and possible action; and individual Councillors have the opportunity to bring forward issues on their own.

The role of Council in the operation of the municipality is to provide guidance and set overarching policy statements that enable staff to carry out day-to-day activities. Council also engages with political counterparts at the local, provincial, and federal levels, including First Nations, to achieve better conditions for its electorate.

Council Members

Council is made up of the Mayor and six Councillors. At the beginning of each year, Committees are assigned to each Councillor based on interest, ability, and need.

Agendas

Regular Meetings of Council Agendas are posted online at least 24 hours prior to a Regular Meeting of Council or can be picked up from the Municipal Hall for a cost.

Meetings

Council meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Municipal Hall, located at 1027 Aldous Street, unless otherwise noted. The schedule of Council meetings is posted annually.

Minutes of Regular Council Meetings are posted online following Council approval.

Delegations

Town of Smithers Council may hear two delegations from the public at each Regular Meeting of Council. Apply to appear as a delegation before Council.
