Snow Removal

The Town of Smithers works hard to achieve a balance between an appropriate snow clearing response time and maintaining a reasonable cost for snow clearing. The Town thanks you for your patience and co-operation.

Once priority areas have been dealt with, crews have the opportunity to widen streets that may, depending on the amount of snow, be reduced to single-lane traffic. A grader will widen the roadway and may plug driveways with heavy snow. In these cases, a loader will normally follow behind the grader and clear driveways to assist residents. However, the Town will not otherwise clear private driveways. You may find it helpful to dump snow from your driveway to the left (facing your home). In this way the snow plow will hit only road snow and will not redeposit your driveway's shovelled snow.

Crews clear sidewalks as soon as possible. In terms of priority, sidewalks to schools and in the downtown area are cleared first.

After a snowfall, crews are often hampered by cars parked on streets, which blocks access for snow clearing equipment. This creates time delays and can be hazardous. A Town bylaw gives the Town the right to remove vehicles that interfere with snow removal. Residents are required to keep the roadways clear of parked vehicles in order to allow the snow clearing crews to do their work safely and efficiently.
