The Recreation, Parks & Culture Department is responsible for the planning and development of recreational activities and special events for the Town of Smithers. The Town works in partnership with community groups and consults with residents to affirm our core values and to establish and achieve recreation programming which meets the needs of the community.

The Civic Centre (widely known as the Arena) is used for everything from hockey practice to high school graduation ceremonies. The shop at the Arena has a limited number of skates and helmets available for rent. For Public Skating and schedule information, call 250-847-5719.
User Groups: Smithers Minor Hockey Association, Christian Hockey League, Smithers Figure Skating Club, Smithers Oldtimers Hockey, Rubber Puckers, Womens Hockey, CN Rusty Rails, and Adult Rec Hockey.
The arena is also used by the Steelhead Hockey Club, which enjoyed a successful season in 2010 with as many as 500 fans per night.
The arena is used by the following schools on a weekly basis as part of the Daily Physical Activity requirements: Lake Kathlyn Elementary School, Walnut Park Elementary School, Muhiem Elementary School, Smithers Secondary School, BV Christian Elementary School, and BV Christian High School.

The Smithers Civic Centre arena building was constructed as an aircraft hanger at Terrace Airport in 1943. It was purchased by a Smithers community group in 1954. Building changes and upgrades since that time include the following:
1957 - Building cut down to six feet in height, modified for arena use and erected on present site.
1963 - Artificial ice installed.
1965 - Ice modified with installation of existing concrete slab.
1967 - East bleachers built, surface paved with asphalt and existing metal siding added.
1970 - 1/2" plywood added to the roof deck during reroofing.
1978 - Ice plant upgraded to an air-cooled system.
1985 - Complete sprinkler system installed.
2000 - New condenser installed.
2002 - New ice plant installed, building upgraded and ice resurfacer garage built.
2003 - Water line upgraded.
2008 - 50th Anniversary celebrated in August.
2009 - New score clock.
2009 - New energy efficient lighting installed.
2010 - New boiler installed.
2010 - New brine pump installed.
2010 - Olympia Ice bear electric ice resurfacer purchased
2011 - Second new boiler installed

The Town of Smithers owns a fantastic parcel of land, which is utilized by many groups from Smithers, the surrounding communities of the Bulkley Valley and from around the province. The Fall Fair Management Committee meets three times per year and overseas the booking requests and capital upgrades requests for the Town owned property.
Lease agreements with the Bulkley Valley Industrial and Agricultural Association, the Northern Saddle Club, and the Bulkley Valley Bowmen (Archery Grounds) provide the opportunity for local groups to offer workshops, rodeos, training sessions, children's activities, and more.
The Fall Fairgrounds are home to the Bulkley Valley Exhibition (Fall Fair), the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Festival (Midsummer Festival), the 3 in 1 Breed Show, and the Annual Archery Shoot. All of these events gather together thousands of participants and spectators from all over British Columbia and Western Canada.

The Town of Smithers owns many facilities that are available to the public for rent. These include the Smithers Civic Centre (the Arena), Riverside Municipal Campground, Fall Fair buildings and space at the Ranger Park building.

We invite all campers to stay at the peaceful Riverside Park Municipal campground located adjacent to the Bulkley River at 3843 - 19th Avenue. The park, operated by the Town of Smithers, is a safe and quiet place to relax and enjoy wonderful views, a beautiful river, and a laid back approach to camping. Pets are welcome on leashes.
When traveling west on Highway 16 (towards Prince Rupert), turn right onto Main Street. Follow the Riverside campground signs for 1.3 kilometres and make a left hand turn at the campground sign on 19th Avenue.

Free Wireless Internet- is limited to 75mb per night. We don't have unlimited internet usage up north here, like in the major centers, so it is best to keep your activities to emailing or browsing only please. 75mb is more than sufficient if you respect this. (This would mean no downloading, no youtube, no movies, no uploading, no watching streaming video online.)
