Downtown Smithers Re-Landscaping Plan
The Town of Smithers is underway developing a Landscape Revitalization Plan for Main Street.
The aim of this planning and design process is to prepare for succession of the existing trees and landscape infrastructure, and to guide future efforts by the Town and private development in order to maintains a unique and high quality landscape character for our downtown.
Draft Concept Design & Review (Phase 2)
Thank you to all that participated and provided feedback in the Workshop on Wednesday, March 14th, and the Open House on Thursday, March 15th. Community input is key to providing direction for the project next steps and detailed design. The information from these events is available below:
- Landscape Revitalization Introduction (Boards 1-3)
- Project Plan Map (Board 4)
- Concept Design Options (Boards 5-7)
The Landscape Revitalization Concept Design Questionnaire has closed and feedback has been received. A report summarizing input will be presented at the Regular Meeting of Council being held on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.
Phase 1 of this project was focused on project background, gathering ideas, and outlining a preliminary framework of opportunities and constraints.
The public engagement process included two events: 1) March 14, 2018, Stakeholder Workshop which was an opportunity for Main Street property/business owners to provide input on aspect directly impacting their storefronts/property; and 2) March 15, 2018 Public Open House, which was an opportunity for all community members to review the project draft directions and concept options.
An Alpine landscaping theme has already been established for Main Street, which includes trees, shrubs and perennials and boulevard features. However, a new landscape design plan is needed to update and reinforce a unified theme to continue with the quality of urban design in the downtown, helping to foster a pedestrian oriented streetscape and integration of higher density mixed use development.
