For Immediate Release
#2020-13
September 1, 2020

SMITHERS – Due to COVID-19, the Town of Smithers will be permitting the option of mail ballot voting for the October 17, 2020, by-election. This is in effort to reduce in person contact and as an option for those who may be in self-isolation or quarantine.

All eligible electors can vote by mail. You are allowed to vote if you are registered as a resident elector (i.e., you live in the Town of Smithers) or a non-resident property elector (i.e., you live elsewhere in BC but own property in the Town of Smithers). If you are not on the List of Registered Electors for the Town of Smithers, an application form will be included in your mail ballot package.
Eligible electors must request a mail ballot package before Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

The request form is available:

• to pick up at Town Hall, 1027 Aldous Street, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays; or
• online at www.smithers.ca

The Town of Smithers will send out mail ballot packages commencing approximately October 1, 2020. To be counted, your mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2020.

“The Town of Smithers is following the suggested provincial guidelines on holding an election during the COVID-19 pandemic. Casting your ballot by mail will reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission as well as minimize congestion at the polls”.
– Dianna Plouffe, Chief Election Officer.
