BC Hydro to Install “Fast Charging” Electric Vehicle Chargers in Second Avenue Parking Lot

The Town of Smithers has entered into a lease agreement with BC Hydro to support the installation of two new Electric Vehicle (EV) fast chargers at the Second Avenue municipal parking lot. The two new Level 3 fast chargers will be in addition to the existing Level 2 charger, bringing the total number of EV chargers at the parking lot to three.

BC Hydro is the project lead for this initiative, which will see the two new Level 3 charging stations installed and operated as part of their Fast Charging Network. Information on BC Hydro’s Fast Charging Network can be found here.

The Level 3 charging stations are expected to be in service by late fall, 2021.

Users of the existing Level 2 charging station should note the existing Level 2 unit is scheduled to be out of service on September 7th, 2021, for one day to accommodate modifications. Future service interruptions (if any) will be posted here as dates are confirmed.

Update as of September 16th, 2021:

BC Hydro has indicated their crews will begin installation of the Level 3 charger kiosks the week of September 20th, 2021. The Second Avenue Parking Lot is scheduled to remain open; however, approximately six parking spots will be fenced off for construction. One parking spot will remain available for use of the existing Level 2 charger. Work inside the parking lot is expected to take approximately two weeks, and the Level 3 units are expected to be operational by mid-October.
