Information Release: UPDATE - Closing of ESS Reception Centre for Wildfire Evacuees

August 1, 2017, 4:00pm

The ESS Reception Centre that opened in Smithers last week to provide assistance to wildfire evacuees will be wrapping up on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at 2:00pm. With the evacuation order being lifted for Williams Lake the volume of evacuees requiring assistance has decreased dramatically.

In the four days the Reception Centre was open Bulkley ESS volunteers assisted over 30 evacuees by providing them with referrals for groceries and lodging.
After August 2, 2017, those individuals still under evacuation order or those with health issues and requiring assistance are asked to visit the Town of Smithers Office at 1027 Aldous Street, Monday-Friday 9:00am-4:00pm.

All evacuees are encouraged to register with Red Cross even if aid is not required. To register visit or call 1 800 863-6582.

ESS provides short-term help to British Columbians who have to leave their homes because of disasters like fires, floods or avalanches. Volunteers are relied upon in all aspects of an ESS response. Anyone interested in volunteering with the Bulkley ESS team or in learning more are asked to email
