MEDIA RELEASE: Update - Solid Waste Collection and Curbside Recycling FAQ’s

For Immediate Release       June 7, 2019

Please be advised that effective immediately, the Town of Smithers will provide weekly garbage collection service until our curbside recycling program can resume. The Town will only collect bagged materials placed in residential garbage carts (GREEN). The Town cannot collect any materials placed in residential recycle carts (BLUE) until the Town of Smithers resumes curbside recycling.

Residents are still encouraged to store their recyclables, if possible, or take them directly to the Smithers/Telkwa Transfer station, as they accept sorted recyclable materials.  Residents planning on taking their recyclables to the Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station are encouraged to visit either the Town of Smithers or Regional District of Bulkley Nechako website for information regarding the RBDN recycling program.

Suspension Curbside Recycle Collection

The Town of Smithers and Council recognizes that the temporary suspension of the collection of Curbside Recycling is not an ideal solution and we will be monitoring the situation closely and making adjustments as necessary.

We ask for your patience as we await direction from Recycle BC on this matter.

Will the Town be providing weekly garbage collection while the collection of Curbside Recycling has been suspended?

Yes, effective June 10.

As per the Towns Solid Waste Collection Bylaw No. 1859, the following materials are prohibited from being placed or mixed with garbage:

• Clean Cardboard
• Products that are accepted at return or recycling centres

Will residents be refunded for the inconvenience while the collection of curbside recycling has been suspended?

Not at this time.  The Town is working closely with Recycle BC to find a temporary solution to minimize the impact to residents.

Is the Town working on a temporary plan for the collection of curbside recycling?

Yes, the Town is working closely with Recycle BC to find a temporary solution. A possible option is finding a temporary location to store and transfer the recycled materials until a permanent solution is found.

Can the Town continue the collection of curbside recycling and take it to the Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station on behalf of Smithers residents?

Town garbage trucks are unable to take the curbside recycling to the Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station because the Town curbside recycling program is single-stream (unsorted) and the program at the transfer station is multi-stream (sorted).  The Town does not have the capacity to sort residents' recyclables, nor pick up sorted recyclables at the curb.
