News Release: Official Opening of Chandler Park Field 2 and Completion of Phase I

August 11, 2017

[SMITHERS] - The public is welcome to attend the official opening of Chandler Park Field 2 and mark the completion of Phase I on Tuesday, August 22nd at 12:30 p.m. on Vancouver Street (the gravel road on the south end of the park) in Smithers.

"Chandler Park has been a dedicated park ever since Smithers was first founded in 1913", said Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach. "The field development work we have undertaken over the past two seasons builds on this long legacy and brings the park closer to the community's vision of an exceptional recreation facility. It has been a tremendous team effort and would not have been possible without the support of our funding partners."

The Chandler Park Fields Upgrade Project began in 2015 with the goal of establishing a third field and upgrading existing Fields 1 and 2. The design was developed in 2015 by Jay Lazzarin Landscape Architect with input from the Chandler Park Field Upgrade Advisory Committee. Phase I improvements totaled $467,947 of investment over two years and included the site design, tree replacements, partial running track removal, drainage improvements, irrigation system over the entire park and the sports field rolled turf on Field 2. New aeration and top dressing equipment was also purchased and a field maintenance plan developed.

Phase I of the Chandler Park Fields Upgrade Project was paid for by the Town of Smithers along with grant support from the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, Northern Development Initiative Trust, Bulkley Valley Soccer Society (Youth), Men's Soccer League, Women's Soccer League, Farm Credit Canada, Seabridge Gold, Wetzin'kwa Community Forest Corporation and Nature's Pantry.

Phase II of the Chandler Park Field Project, fencing the perimeter, is proposed to take place this fall. Phase III is anticipated to take place in 2018 and includes the removal of the remainder of the former track as well as partial re-sodding of Field 1 and the south end of Field 3.
