Smithers is located in the Bulkley Valley in northwestern British Columbia. The area is abundant in natural and cultural history and has a diverse heritage. The climate lends itself to quality outdoor pursuits throughout the year for all to enjoy. Some winter activities include skiing and snowmobiling, hockey and curling. Summer fun ranges from alpine hiking to rock climbing, ultimate frisbee to river fishing.

Smithers is located at 54 degrees, 47 minutes North latitude and 127 degrees, 10 minutes West longitude.

History

The community of Smithers was founded in 1913 as the divisional headquarters of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The community took its name from Sir Alfred Smithers, the chairman of the board of directors of the railway.
