The Town of Smithers offers a variety of payment options to pay your property taxes on time and avoid late penalties. Please select your preferred method from the list below to find out more information.
- Log into your online banking through BV Credit Union, Royal Bank of Canada, CIBC & Scotiabank
- Search for bill payee "Smithers"
- Select the "property taxes" payee
- Enter the account number which is your 10 digit jurisdiction/roll number beginning with 478 (no spaces or periods) - ie. 4780123456
*Owners are responsible to ensure that payment of their annual property taxes is received at Town Hall on time to avoid penalty. Some financial institutions hold payments before forwarding them to the Town. Avoid the risk of penalty by paying online at least a few business days early to be on time.
You may pay by Interac at the Town Office.
If you have a bank account at the BV Credit Union you may pay your taxes at the Credit Union. They will immediately remit your payment claim to the Town.
You can pay your taxes with a cheque post dated to the tax due date!. This will allow Town staff time to check your payment. Staff can notify you prior to the due date if there are any issues with your payment. The payment is not cashed at the Bank until the date of the cheque. Cheques must be RECEIVED at the Town Office by the tax due date in order to avoid the 10% penalty. Post marks on envelopes are not acceptable.
There is a payment drop box located at the main entrance of the Town office. Place your cheque in an envelope and drop it in the box. Your payments will be processed promptly each morning (Monday to Friday).
If your mortgage company is paying your property tax a statement confirming notification to the organization that holds your mortgage will be shown on the property tax notice
You are responsible for communicating with your mortgage company and managing this service to ensure the balance owing is paid by the due date to avoid late penalty charges.
The Town of Smithers is not responsible for errors made by mortgage providers.
As of Jan. 1, 2021, the Province of BC is responsible for the Home Owner Grant program. To apply for the grant ,visit www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant
Payment can be made at Town Hall by cash, cheque, or Interac.
Please note we are unable to accept payment of property taxes by credit card at this time.
The Town of Smithers offers a Property Tax Prepayment Plan, which you may wish to participate in.
You can make tax prepayments for the next tax year (2023) using the Town of Smithers' "Tax Prepayment Plan".
Tax prepayments start in August of each year and end by mid May of the year the taxes are billed out. Payments are taken out of your bank account automatically each month. Interest is paid on the tax prepayments. Forms to enroll in this program can be obtained from Town Office or downloaded below.
