On Saturday, October 15, 2022, Smithers residents will elect; one (1) Mayor, six (6) Councillors; and three (3) School Trustees for Zone 2 (Smithers/Glentanna/Driftwood).

Election Notices
The Town of Smithers is seeking individuals to work as Election Officials for the 2022 Municipal Election. Preference will be given to those individuals who have experience working Municipal, Provincial, or Federal Elections.
You will be required to attend a training session on Thursday, September 29, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Officials are needed on the following days:
Advance Voting Day One – Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Advance Voting Day Two – Wednesday, October 12, 2022
General Voting Day - Saturday, October 15, 2022You may apply for as many voting days as you are available, however, Election Officials must attend the training session. You will be required to be on site from approximately 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. each day and will be paid a total stipend of $250. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

Nomination Process
Public Notice is given to the electors of the Town of Smithers and School District No. 54, Trustees Zone 2 (Smithers/Glentanna/Driftwood) that nomination for the offices of:
One (1) Mayor for the Town of Smithers
Six (6) Councillors for the Town of Smithers
Three (3) School Trustees for Zone 2 (Smithers/Glentanna/Driftwood)Nomination documents are available at the Town of Smithers Municipal Hall, 1027 Aldous Street, beginning August 2, 2022, during regular business hours, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays, to the close of the nomination period on Friday, September 9, 2022.
Nominations will be received by the Chief Election Officer or a designated person by hand, mail or other delivery service to the Town of Smithers Municipal Hall, 1027 Aldous Street, during regular business hours, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays, from 9:00 am on Tuesday, August 30, to 4:00 pm on Friday, September 9, 2022, by hand, mail, or other delivery. If documents are provided by fax or email, the original documents must be received by the Chief Election Officer by Friday, September 16, 2022.
Qualifications for Office
A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:
- Canadian citizen;
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day October 15, 2022;
- resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed;
- not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.
- not disqualified under the School Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office as a trustee, or be otherwise disqualified by law.
Campaign Period Expense Limits
In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2020 local by-election, the following expense limits for candidates during the campaign period apply:
- MAYOR $10,797.83
- COUNCILLOR $5,398.92
- TRUSTEE $5,398.92.
Third Party Advertizing Limits
In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2020 local by-election, the following third-party advertising limits apply:
- MAYOR $809.84
- COUNCILLOR $809.84
- TRUSTEE $809.84.

List of Registered Electors
Beginning Tuesday, August 30, 2022, until the close of general voting for the election on Saturday, October 15, 2022, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection, at the Town of Smithers Municipal Hall, 1027 Aldous Street, during regular office hours, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list or use the information included in the list, except for the purposes of Part 3 – Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. An elector may request that their address or other information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of electors. Contact the Chief Election Officer to make a request or receive additional information.
Objection to Registration of an Elector
An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 9, 2022. An objection must be in writing and may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the Town of Smithers and can only be made on the basis that a person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or that a person whose name appears on the list of electors is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the Town of Smithers.

MAIL BALLOT VOTING: If you wish to vote by mail, you must submit a completed mail ballot application no later than October 10, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. Mail ballot voting applications are available to pick up at Town Hall, 1027 Aldous Street, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays; or online at www.smithers.ca. Eligible electors are encouraged to apply prior to September 30, 2022, to ensure time for mailing/processing.
Applications received before September 30, 2022, will be ready for distribution on or around October 3, 2022. You are responsible for ensuring that your completed ballot and any supporting documentation is received at Town Hall no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 14, or delivered to Muheim Elementary School, 3659 3rd Avenue, no later than 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022.
ELECTOR REGISTRATION
If you are not on the list of electors, you may register at the time of voting by completing the required application form available at the voting place. You may also register in advance at Town Hall, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm excluding statutory holidays. To register you must meet the following qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day:
- Canadian citizen
- resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately preceding the day of registration
- resident of OR registered owner of real property in the Town of Smithers for at least 30 days immediately preceding the day of registration,
- not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.
To register, resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity.
To register, non-resident property electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, proof that they are entitled to register in relation to the property, and, if there is more than one owner of the property, written consent from the other property owners.
