May is Mining Month!

The Gem of Northern British Columbia - Smithers

In Smithers and Northwest BC, the hustle and bustle of mineral exploration is well known.  We have been watching prospectors, diamond drillers, geologists and mining executives pursue their dreams and projects for over a century.

Today mineral exploration, mining and associated businesses which are based in Smithers are a significant and integral part of our economy and Mining Month is a great time to recognize the contribution of those working in the sector.  I want to give a little shout-out to the businesses that provide essential services to the mining sector through supplies and services.

Exploration and mining operations rely on our local businesses and what they buy provides income for families who live here and that strengthens our community fabric.  At the Town we recognize the importance of the Smithers Regional Airport to the mining industry and work to continually improve the quality of offerings at YYD.

I always like to take note of the Smithers Exploration Group, who are long-time champions for  the mining sector.  SEG provides advocacy, education, hosts the Rock Room – a significant collection of mineral samples from Northwest BC and a valuable resource for geologists.

On behalf of the Town of Smithers and Town Council-  thank you to those in the mineral exploration and mining sector for the contributions you make to our community.
