Sewer Main Flushing

The Town of Smithers Utility Department is responsible for maintaining the almost 44 kms of sewer mains in the wastewater collection system. Utilities crews perform twice per year flushing on areas of the system that have been identified as “problematic” in the past. These lines are flushed in early spring and late fall.

The rest of the wastewater collection system has been divided up into three areas. These areas are flushed in rotation, ensuring that every main pipe in the system is flushed at least once every three years. Flushing is conducted using the Town’s  hydrovac/water flushing truck. High pressure, high volume water and specially designed nozzles are used to clear the system of grease, silt, and other debris that can build up in the sewer mains, potentially causing sewer backups.
