Organic Waste

CEEP priority: Close the Loop on Waste

The Town of Smithers (ToS) and Regional District of Bulkley Nechako (RDBN) are seeking to identify a suitable organics diversion strategy for the region. This study is important because a large part (35 to 40%) of the landfilled waste in the ToS is made up of organics and this contributes to a significant portion of the town’s greenhouse gas emissions. The feasibility study will seek to understand how to close the loop on the organic waste as identified in the 2021 Smithers Community Energy and Emissions Plan and seek to determine suitable sites and technologies for a compost facility for the Town of Smithers, Village of Telkwa (VoT), and surrounding Electoral Area.

This project includes consultation and engagement with municipal and regional district staff, local haulers, property owners and other stakeholders throughout the study. This study is a significant step towards a sustainable future for our region.
