SMITHERS, B.C. — On May 23, 2025, the Town of Smithers is hosting one of the largest live emergency response training exercises in Northern BC, bringing together more than 150 emergency personnel from across the region.

The training will take place at the Smithers Regional Airport and is designed to develop frontline response capabilities and the coordination of a simulated Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). Participants include the Smithers Fire Department, RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, Canadian Rangers, Search and Rescue teams, Bulkley Valley District Hospital, and emergency representatives from Telkwa, Witset, Houston, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, and more.

The exercise will simulate a complex and evolving emergency scenario that requires coordinated response across multiple agencies. The EOC will focus on high-level decision-making and resource coordination, and first responders on the ground will be engaged in hands-on, live-action training. The scenario will include simulated patient care, airlifts, interagency communication, and transport logistics.

Members of the public may notice a significant presence of emergency vehicles and personnel at the Smithers Regional Airport, simulated patients being transported to the Bulkley Valley District Hospital, and low-flying helicopters operating between the airport and the Fall Fairgrounds. This is part of the controlled exercise, and there is no cause for public concern.

This large-scale training is funded through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, ensuring that our communities and responders are well-prepared to respond to real emergencies when they occur.

Residents are asked to stay clear of the designated training zones and to follow any signage or directions provided by on-site personnel.
