NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that under the provisions of the Community Charter, the Council of the Town of Smithers will consider “Bylaw No. 2012 - Council Procedure” for adoption at the Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Regular Meeting, held at 6:30 p.m. at 1027 Aldous Street, Smithers, BC.
Council Procedures Bylaw No. 2012 proposes the following:
- Schedule D, Section 6(a) – Agenda summaries. Amend the bylaw to exempt Agenda Items 17 (“Correspondence A (for Action)”) and 18 (“Correspondence B (for Information)”) from the requirement to include a summary, allowing correspondence to be presented in concise point form.
- Schedule D, Section 10 – Public Comment Period. Amend the bylaw to replace the existing detailed list of exemptions with a cross-reference to the broader and more comprehensive restrictions set out in Schedule D, Section 11(c)(ii), and to explicitly authorize the Chair to suspend or terminate the public comment period at their discretion.
- Schedule D, Section 11 – Delegations. Update the delegation restrictions to clarify that delegation requests may be refused where the matter has been addressed through a public hearing or other opportunity for public input required by enactment as a prerequisite to the adoption of a bylaw or approval of a permit, including where that requirement is exempted by legislation.
A copy of the bylaw referred to in the Public Notice may be inspected at the Town of Smithers Office, 1027 Aldous Street, Smithers, BC, during regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays.
