In September 2022, the Accessible British Columbia Act came into effect, identifying approximately 750 public sector organizations required to comply with the legislation.
As a first step, the Town of Smithers and the Smithers Public Library jointly established an Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) in March 2023.
On October 10, 2023, Smithers Town Council adopted the Smithers Accessibility Plan and established public feedback mechanisms to help identify and address accessibility barriers within the community.
Why Update the Accessibility Plan?
Provincial accessibility legislation requires Accessibility Plans to be reviewed and updated at least once every three years, incorporating feedback from both the Accessibility Advisory Committee and the public.
As a result, the Smithers Accessibility Plan must be updated by October 10, 2026.
We want to hear from you!
Fill out the online Community Survey here.
Printed copies of the survey are available at Town Hall and the Smithers Public Library. Completing the survey will help the Town and the Library to identify existing strengths, gaps, and opportunities in the provision of accessible services and infrastructure, and accordingly, update the Accessibility Plan and the Implementation Action items for the next 3 years
The Survey will be open until 4:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026
