Temporary Winter Shelter Closure Update

The temporary winter shelter operated by BV Harm Reduction Society on Third Avenue officially closed on March 31, 2026.

We recognize that this transition may be difficult for some members of our community. Residents may notice an increase in individuals staying in the Temporary Overnight Sheltering Area (TOSA) adjacent to Town Hall, and we understand this can bring concern. Town staff are working closely with local service providers to monitor and support the safety and well-being of encampment residents, as well as the broader community.

To help maintain safety in the area, Town Council has approved an extension of the overnight security contract until November 2026. Security will remain at the TOSA and Downtown core from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily, and 24 hours a day on weekends.

The Town continues to work in partnership with BC Housing on the progression of the Heart & Hearth program. Upcoming community engagement from BC Housing will provide opportunities for residents and businesses to share input and help shape solutions that reflect the values and needs of Smithers.

BC Housing is also continuing to move forward with developing the Alfred Avenue project, which will provide supportive housing, along with 20 permanent shelter beds. This is an important step toward longer-term housing stability in our community.
