Update on the BC Housing Alfred Avenue Project and Shelter

The Town of Smithers is aware of the proposal from BC Housing to establish a 25-bed, year-round interim shelter at 3892 Third Avenue. This is a BC Housing led project, under the Province’s HEART AND HEARTH program.

The proposal is a temporary safe space for people in need, while BC Housing continues to develop the permanent support housing and shelter at 3879 Alfred Avenue. We recognize that this proposal may bring forward questions, concerns, and uncertainty for some community members, while others may be supportive. These reactions are understandable, and we want residents to know that their voices matter in this process.

Town Council has requested that BC Housing undertake public engagement with the community before any final decisions are made or brought forward for Council’s support. It is important that residents have the opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback directly with BC Housing.

Residents are encouraged to attend the community open house on May 13 to learn more about the proposal. Additional information is also available on BC Housing’s project webpage: https://letstalkhousingbc.ca/smithers-alfred-ave
