For Immediate Release:

SMITHERS - The Town of Smithers is proud to announce that Mabel Forsythe will receive the Freedom of the Municipality, one of the highest civic honours that can be bestowed by a local government.

The award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the social, cultural, and civic life of the community. Through a lifetime of leadership, mentorship, and service, Mabel Forsythe has helped shape Smithers into a more welcoming, inclusive, and connected place.

As a matriarch of the Gitdumden (Bear Clan) and holder of the hereditary title Timberwolf, Mabel Forsythe's leadership is grounded in Wet’suwet’en governance, kinship responsibilities, and the teachings passed down by her ancestors. She has devoted her life to sharing those teachings with future generations, helping Indigenous youth, young mothers, and families strengthen their connection to culture, identity, and the land.

For many people in Smithers, Mabel Forsythe has been a teacher, mentor, and guide. She has welcomed countless visitors and newcomers to Wet’suwet’en territory, helping people better understand the history, culture, and responsibilities connected to these lands. Her generosity, wisdom, and willingness to share knowledge have helped build understanding and meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

As a Gitdumden hereditary leader, Mabel Forsythe carries responsibilities for the territories on which Smithers is located. Throughout her life, she has worked to uphold those responsibilities while engaging with governments, organizations, and community members in ways that foster mutual respect and understanding.

Granting the Freedom of the Municipality recognizes not only Mabel Forsythe's remarkable personal contributions, but also the enduring presence, leadership, and stewardship of the Wet’suwet’en people in this region.

The Freedom of the Municipality award will be given during a Special Open Meeting of Council on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at Smithers Town Hall (1027 Aldous Street). Members of the public are welcome to attend; however, capacity is limited to 80 people.

Following the Special Open Meeting, community members are invited to attend the screening of a short film celebrating Mabel Forsythe’s life and contributions to the community. The screening will be held at the Dze L Kant Friendship Centre Hall (3955 3rd Ave), with doors opening at 6:15 p.m. and the film beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Town of Smithers invites residents to join in celebrating Mabel Forsythe and expressing gratitude for the knowledge, leadership, and care she has shared with the community over many years.
