Joining a committee is a great way to get involved in shaping the future of the Town of Smithers. Committee members bring their ideas, experiences and perspectives to the table to help contribute to important decisions. 
 
  1. The Smithers Public Library Board is currently seeking three (3) new Board Members. The Smithers Public Library Board is responsible for providing overall direction to the Library to ensure relevant, comprehensive and efficient service to the community. Applications to the Smithers Public Library Board are due by Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
  2. The Board of Variance is currently seeking one (1) new Board Member. The Board of Variance operates independently from Town Council and provides impartial decisions on appeals for minor variances to certain Town bylaws. Homeowners or developers can apply to the Board if following a specific bylaw would cause them undue hardship (e.g. due to unique property conditions). Applications to the Board of Variance are due by Tuesday, November 17, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
  3. The Advisory Planning Commission (APC) is currently seeking two (2) new Commission Members. The APC provides advice to Town Council on planning-related matters such as land use, community planning, and proposed permits or bylaws. The APC helps ensure that community perspectives are considered in decisions that shape the future growth and development of Smithers. Applications to the APC are due by Tuesday, November 17, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
