SMITHERS, B.C. — In the early hours of Saturday, July 19, a fire occurred at the temporary overnight sheltering area located across from Town Hall. Smithers Fire Rescue and other first responders arrived quickly and contained the fire promptly.
Tragically, one individual sustained significant burn injuries and was airlifted to Vancouver for medical treatment.
The Town of Smithers is grateful to the volunteer firefighters and first responders who acted swiftly and with compassion to mitigate the situation and prevent further harm.
This incident underscores the urgent need for safe, sustainable housing solutions and strengthened support networks for vulnerable residents. The Town remains committed to working with provincial and federal partners to pursue lasting solutions that prioritize the health, safety, and dignity of all members of the community.
