At its Regular Meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Smithers Town Council will consider the Development Variance Permit (DVP) application DV25-08 for 1207 Main Street.
As part of relocating the Heartstring Home Décor and Gifts business from its current location on Third Avenue to the subject location, the applicant intends to reuse their three existing business signs, with limited modifications; the hanging sign will be placed facing Main Street, while the two fascia signs will be placed facing Second Avenue and the rear lane.
As per section 3.4 of the Town of Smithers Sign Bylaw, sign modifications and replacements must be completed only in compliance with the current sign standards. Since the proposed sign relocation will create non-conformities, the applicant’s request is to vary the following sections of the Town of Smithers Sign Bylaw No. 1841:
- Section 7.12 lettering requirements for signs located in downtown zones, as necessary to install two fascia signs without relief; and
- Section 8.4 a) establishing fascia sign area regulations, as necessary to increase the fascia sign size permitted from 2.47 m2 to 5.94 m2.
Anyone who believes they will be affected by the proposed variance permit is invited to submit written comments regarding the subject application. All written submissions must be received at the Town Office before 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12th, 2026. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall, 1027 Aldous Street, Smithers, BC, and Facebook livestreamed at: https://www.facebook.com/TownofSmithers/.
